Boost Your Immune System This Fall

Updated: Oct 25

1. Embrace Seasonal Foods To Stay Well

Fall is a treasure trove of nutritious foods. Think pumpkins, apples, and squash. Pumpkins are rich in vitamin A and antioxidants, while apples offer fiber and vitamin C. Consider easy-to-make side dishes that incorporate squash, zucchini, or other fresh vegetables. Healthier dessert choices, such as organic apple-inspired dishes, can satisfy your sweet cravings while providing a healthy dose of fiber. Research shows that incorporating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables into your diet can increase the intake of essential vitamins and minerals, which help enhance immunity.

2. Stay Hydrated

When temperatures drop, many forget to drink enough water. Hydration is critical for overall health, including a robust immune system. Aim for at least half of your body weight in ounces of fresh, spring water daily. If you have reverse osmosis "RO" water, add in trace mineral drops to get the minerals your body needs from water. Herbal teas, such as chamomile or ginger, can not only keep you hydrated but also offer additional benefits. Ginger tea has been shown to reduce inflammation, while chamomile can promote better sleep.

3. Get Moving

Fall's beautiful landscapes are an invitation to get outside. Engage in activities like walks through colorful foliage, biking along scenic trails, or simply enjoying brisk walks in your neighborhood. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Studies indicate that regular physical activity can boost immunity by increasing circulation and promoting better health overall. Enjoying nature will also enhance your mood, making your fall experience even more enjoyable.

4. Prioritize Sleep

Shorter days mean it's essential to focus on getting enough sleep. Quality sleep helps strengthen your immune system. Aim for 7-9 hours each night and consider a relaxing bedtime routine. Create a cozy environment by dimming the lights and reading or practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing. According to the CDC, adults who do not get enough sleep are more likely to fall ill, highlighting the importance of prioritizing rest.

5. Wash Your Hands

The arrival of cold season makes hand hygiene more important than ever. Make washing your hands a daily habit, especially after public outings. Use regular soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This simple act can significantly decrease the likelihood of getting sick. When soap and water aren’t accessible, carry unscented or non-synthetically scented hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol as a backup; my favorite brands are Everyone "EO".

6. Manage Stress

The busy fall season can lead to increased stress. Managing stress is vital for your overall health. Consider trying yoga, meditation, or even taking time to enjoy your favorite book. Taking just 10 minutes daily to focus on relaxation can substantially reduce stress levels and strengthen your immune response. According to the American Psychological Association, reducing stress can lessen inflammation and improve overall health.

7. Stay Connected

Social connections are vital for mental health. As the days shorten, it’s important to maintain social ties with family and friends. Plan phone calls, virtual gatherings, or in-person meetups. Sharing a warm drink or enjoying an outdoor fall activity together can enhance your mood and reduce feelings of isolation, positively impacting your overall well-being. Please make sure to not overbook yourself as well. Staying connected is essential to overall health and well-being. Finding balance when you need to back off and make some time for yourself and immediate loved ones is also essential. Libra season is all about balance, and it starts in the fall, so the energies are working for you here!

8. Practice Mindfulness

Taking time for mindfulness can greatly enhance your well-being. Spend moments each day reflecting on the beauty of fall and what you are grateful for. Engaging in mindfulness practices like breathing exercises or meditation can help reduce stress and improve your health. Simple activities like enjoying a walk in nature while focusing on the sounds and sights around you can make a significant difference in your overall mood.

Making the Most of Fall

Staying well during the fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By incorporating these practical tips into your routine, you’ll be better equipped to enjoy what the season has to offer. Small changes can lead to significant improvements in your health. Embrace the fall season, take care of your body, and savor every moment. Happy autumn!
